Game #8 Wise Stuns Higher-Ranked Northwestern 2-1 as Pumas Continue Late-Season Turnaround Pumas overcome major rankings disadvantage to improve to 3-7. UPPER MARLBORO, Md. — Wise's soccer season has been defined by adversity, but the Pumas delivered one of their most encouraging results with a 2-1 victory over Northwestern. The win improved Wise to 3-7 and marked its second victory in three matches following an extended losing streak. The result was particularly notable given the diSerence in the teams' MaxPreps Maryland rankings at the time. Wise entered ranked No. 174, while Northwestern was No. 38. But the Pumas overcame that disparity to secure a one-goal victory over a Wildcats team that entered the contest with a strong record. Northwestern fell to 7-3 with the loss. The victory also represented a significant improvement over Wise's previous meeting with Northwestern, which the Pumas had lost by three goals. This time, Wise scored twice and limited the Wildcats to one goal. The defensive performance was especially important for a Pumas team that had struggled to prevent opponents from scoring during its losing streak. The Pumas were scheduled to host Suitland next, hoping to build on their latest victory. UPPER MARLBORO, Md. — The first victory of Wise's soccer season suggested the Pumas might be ready for a promising campaign. A 2-0 road shutout of Bishop McNamara gave Wise an encouraging start, built around defensive discipline and an ability to finish scoring opportunities. What followed was considerably more diSicult. The Pumas lost seven consecutive matches, enduring defensive struggles, scoring droughts and diSicult conference matchups. But Wise's latest result suggests the season's story may not be finished. The Pumas defeated Northwestern, 2-1, in a notable upset that improved their record to 3-7. It was Wise's second victory in three matches and came against a Northwestern team ranked significantly higher in the MaxPreps Maryland soccer standings. The contrast between the two programs made the result especially meaningful. Northwestern entered ranked No. 38 in the state, while Wise was No. 174. Yet the Pumas found a way to win. The victory followed a diSicult opening stretch in which Wise struggled to establish consistency. After defeating Bishop McNamara, the Pumas suSered a 5-0 loss to Parkdale, a 4-2 defeat against DuVal and a 5-3 loss to Laurel. The oSense occasionally showed promise, particularly against Laurel, but defensive struggles continued.
Shutout losses to Eleanor Roosevelt and Bladensburg added to the frustration. A 4-2 defeat against Flowers extended the losing streak to seven matches. Through those challenges, Wise continued searching for the balance that had produced its season-opening victory. The win over Northwestern oSered evidence of progress. Wise scored twice and held the Wildcats to one goal, demonstrating the combination of oSensive production and defensive resistance that had been missing during much of the losing streak. For a team that had previously lost to Northwestern by three goals, the narrow victory also represented a measurable improvement. Now 3-7, Wise has an opportunity to build on that progress. The Pumas were scheduled to face Suitland next, with the chance to continue their recent turnaround. Live From The Pitch Takeaway: Wise's season has not followed an easy path, but its victory over Northwestern demonstrates why development matters beyond the win-loss column. After seven consecutive defeats, the Pumas have shown they can compete with — and defeat — a higher-ranked opponent.
